Many of our customers have wanted a complete accounting of military gensets. Below you will find a detailed list of all military generators arranged by size kW. There are two sections. The first section shows generators that are in current US Military Service. The second section shows generators that may still be in service, but are also being migrated out of service.
We have linked the units that we carry to their respective page. You need to look for the nameplate for the model. Tough to help without it. Is this 1, 2 or 4 cylinder gas? Do you know size in KW? I have inherited an old military generator. It has been painted black in color but under the shielded plug wires it started life OD green. I know nothing about it. Hour meter shows two 2 hours of run time. I would love to get it firing. Exhaust pipes are wrapped with insulation.
Probability Asbestos. There is a shroud from the fan end of the engine that feeds air to the fins on the cylinders and generator body. On the placard is refers to suit warming. And lower on the same placard are words to the effect of clothing warmer. Mounted on either side of the tube frame are two female lugs, much like a welders lead, not as deep or large in diameter. I am curious if any one can give any information about this little generator, and its application.
Good evening, I have purchased a mep b military generator that has a yanmar engine. I was wondering what kind of conventional oil would be ideal to replace this? Please use the GMG Contact form for all parts requests. Tar is not great. Perhaps there was an electrical malfunction. That component should be checked for the correct electrical values. Generators that are stored for a long time risk generator head corrosion. Exercising generators once a month is as much for the electrical generator head as it is for the engine.

You can get a Pelton wheel for a couple of hundred dollars cast in aluminum or bronze that will crank out enough power to power a home.
With a constant water source there is no interruption. I love the idea because it is the most simple generator you can get. The engine itself is a solid metal wheel connected to the generator's shaft.
Even with a smaller wheel, adding up to 4 water nozzles adds a lot more output. I wish I had some land with a source because I would definitely experiment with this. They even make tiny ones to output 12V DC. Here is a cool site of a build: The microhydro plant And a Vid: start my micro hydro generators turbine turgo energy - YouTube. Grandpa Pipes.

Why Buy a Military Generator and FAQ
They are older models with outdated parts that are hard to find. Maybe if you buy TWO of them! IMO these days it is getting hard to find parts for a lot of common things Many manufactures of militray equipment, take to heart the specifications and tweek them enough to make common parts unusable on the equipment. The public explaintion to Congress was to ensure the highest quality part was used and to deter the ability for enemies who obtain them from using them.
Truth is, it ensures a long-term parts order and money after money, afterall its taxpayers money, not theirs. So you can find cheap equipemtn but replacement parts may not be available and commopn everyday parts will just not fit. Second, is that militray equipment are designed to meet specifications when manufactured. Seldom is efficency and cost effective anywhere int he same unverse. Militray never consideres the amount of cost of fuel in equioment as they bet what they want when they want - no questions asked.
So those comparable civilian generators may all come in around 3 gallons an hour to operate while that military one may need 10 gallons. Isaac-1 New member. I started looking around last night using google to find advice on buying military surplus generators and was shocked to see so much bad advice and misinformation out there on a variety of message boards ranging from the wacko survivalist boards, gun owner boards, to home owner groups. Some of this advice may be considered a matter of opinion, you don't want a big heavy generator, and others are just plain wrong like, the small 3KW diesel powered military generators have rope pull starters and Onan built engines that you can't find parts for.
So anyway here are a few random tidbits of questionable advice I found Seldom is efficency and cost effective anywhere int he same unverse. Militray never consideres the amount of cost of fuel in equioment as they bet what they want when they want - no questions asked. So those comparable civilian generators may all come in around 3 gallons an hour to operate while that military one may need 10 gallons.
All Military Generators
The older Military Generators were designed to keep lighting and essential equipment running. At that time, there was not a lot of computer use like there is today.
The Generators were not real stable for power. If you hook one of those up to your house, today, don't use anything computerized. Refridgerator, Stove, if computerized. Computer, TV, Sterio, etc, not going to run on that power, or worse yet, you'll ruin them The real problem with military gensets is that the military beats them to death before getting rid of them.
Maybe if you bought twenty of them used them for parts to keep one running If it looks new, quite possibly it was used in power generation classes, and I would avoid like the plague. But one that looks like its done a days work was probably maintained according to schedule. Yeah, I've seen a little of what you posted myself. The web is full of self-proclaimed experts giving advice, so I guess the military generator information is about on par.
I can tell you that in the year that I've had my A, I've used it to power the house monthly, and for real multi-hour outages several times, and it kept four refrigerators and freezers, a 2-ton air conditioner, six computers, various home electronic audio and video devices, and various shop equipment running without so much as a hiccup.
I've even switched to generator power when thunderstorms were in the area to avoid the power dropouts and surges they often cause. I suppose that the bright side of the misinformation is less demand, and therefore lower cost for us. Last edited: Aug 20, Isaac-1 said:. No, not too far off, but given we are talking about mostly weather proof generators it does have a bit of a negative spin to it.For years I have felt we needed a back up generator to power the house whenever we loose power.
It would be easy to just run down to Northern Hydraulics and pick up one, but being in the old engine hobby I thought it would be much more fun to build one from pieces. At the spring Portland swap meet I found a brand new still in the crate synchronous generator that puts out 6. It was made in I missed a chance on buying a stand alone Continnental power unit to drive it with, so when we returned in August to the fall Portland show I was looking for an engine to drive it with.
There were some new air cooled Japanese engines there, but I didn't really want anything new. Then I found her, a model ZXB 4 cylinder Hercules stand alone power unit that was originally on a military generator. This was hauled back to the list area and cranked up and run awhile. Sweet little runner. Once home I toyed with the idea of putting the engine and generator on a mid sized Hercules cart.
I have a few extra lying around and it looked like it might fit. The engines has been bolted on to the Herc cart and the generator placed near to see how she fits. Looks pretty good I think. And a picture from the front An adaptor needed to be made to attach the C-face generator mount to the bellhousing on the Hercules engine.
This was turned from a burned out hot rolled ring. The inside bolt hole pattern being drilled on the Bridgeport. The outside hole pattern being drilled. The completed adaptor ring can be seen between the generator and the bellhousing. The original torque plate that turned the military generator had too small of a bushing to carry this generator, so the old center bushing was cut out and a larger bushing welded in. Here the final boring and truing of the OD is being done.
The ID was bored concentric with the 4 tubes at the OD within. In military use this engine turned rpm.
I will need to turn this engine at rpm to make 60 cycles on a 4 pole generator. In doing so I discovered the cooling fan was running way too fast. This required making a new fan assembly with a larger fan pulley. Luckily I had just the right sized pulley in the scrap pile and bored it out to fit a newly designed fan hub.
Here the fan hub is finished and I'm boring the hole pattern for the fan blade to attach to. And this bolt pattern is for the pulley to attach with. One of the most interesting types of electrical generators used by the U. The hand cranked generators disassemble and are light enough to be man-packed in a carrying bag or strapped on a packboard.
The hand operated generator provides enough power for a small radio set, crypto gear, rechargeable batteries, and other electronic equipment in the field using a soldier's own muscles to rotate the generator.
The clever and versitile hand cranked generators have been in use since before WW II and continue in use in the 21st century. Photo: eBay seller bluediamond. This page lists U. Notes: This list is not exhaustive. The date is the approximate year the equipment was in use, based on manuals or other information.
Manuals with suffix -xx refer to a series depending on maintenance level. If you can fill in any missing data or correct anything in this table, please contact Olive-Drab.
